Teachers' Views on Technology in the Classroom - Video Feature

Take a few minutes to watch this video series from teachers across the country and abroad that are using technology in the classroom.

Some of the technologies observed in the series include ipads and ipod touches, overhead projectors, powerpoint, youtube, laptops, skype, google docs, garage band, and dragon naturally speaking.

Some ways they're using technology include:

Reverse Learning --- View videos of lessons for homework then later discuss in class.

Using technology in non-science, math or tech related classes, eg, history, art

Digital Warmups --- begin classes by asking a few questions and getting immediate feedback using google docs, ipod’s, and the teachers website.

Enabling students to freely explore their interests.

Laptop programs beginning in Kindergarten.

Using technology to assist children with learning disabilities.

There are some issues...

Teachers don’t always know the latest technologies --- However they don't need to know. Sometimes they learn together. Sometimes teachers learn from students.

Distractions --- email, twitter, facebook, youtube

Another issue that jumps out at me are the costs. Some of these technologies are cost prohibitive for some families... Thanks to resources like donorschoose.org, we're beginning to change that.

It's clear to me that the benefits far outweigh the problems.

I'll sponsor your Space Program

Just read over on Geek.com about Luke Geissbuhler and Son's launch of weather balloon to 100,000 ft. Check out the vid.

Judging from the post and video here's the budget... minus 8 months planning time.
$260 GoPro HD Hero
$300 IPhone with GPS
$70 Weather Balloon
$100 other stuff... helium, foam, tape, batteries etc.
$730 Total

I hope that's in the ballpark, because if it is, here's my offer to one Public School Teacher that wants to take this on with her/his students. I'll sponsor the project given the following conditions;

1. You post it on DonorsChoose.org
2. Budget is under $1000
3. School is in the 'High Poverty' category per DonorsChoose requirements
4. School is in NYC (any borough)

I don't know Luke, but maybe we can reach out to him for a few tips.

Let me know.

Hacking Education with Donors Choose #hackedu

Amazingly, donorschoose.org makes hacking education easy.  I see these projects as micro-startups, bootstrapping, hacking and finding creative ways to educate kids.

The notes below were written to me by students of a Donors Choose project I helped with, "FlipCams for Hispanic Students".  Their teacher is using the Cams to enhance their learning of English.  I relate to these kids.  I learned english after entering first grade... sink-or-swim.

I've set up a Giving Page for projects where Reading is encouraged or Technology is applied in creative ways.  Click and donate...  If you find a cool project, let me know and I'll post it on my giving page.
